NCERT Class 9 New Syllabus 2026-27 β Everything That Has Changed
If your child is going into Class 9 this year β or if you are a Class 9 student yourself β this is the most important update you need to read before the session starts.
NCERT is implementing the most significant curriculum overhaul in over 20 years for Class 9 starting the academic year 2026-27. This is not a small update where a chapter or two gets added or removed. NCERT has introduced entirely new textbooks for all core subjects, with new titles, redesigned chapters, and updated pedagogical approaches. Traditional textbooks such as Beehive, Moments, the previous Science textbook, and the separate History, Geography, Civics, and Economics textbooks are no longer prescribed for the current academic session. In simple words β if your child is using the old books, they are studying the wrong syllabus.
This post covers every change, subject by subject, in plain language.
Why did NCERT change the syllabus?
The Class 9 syllabus has been revised for 2026-27 to align with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCF-SE) 2023, which itself emerged from the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It focuses on competency-based learning, conceptual clarity, real-world application and reduced rote memorisation. Competishun
The idea behind all these changes is straightforward β stop making students memorise everything, and start making them actually understand and apply what they learn. Whether that sounds like a big improvement or a big challenge depends on how you look at it. Either way, the changes are happening and students need to be prepared.
The biggest overall change β 3 parts instead of 2
The new syllabus drafted by NCERT is a structured framework divided into 3 distinct parts. Part 1 covers four primary languages β English, Hindi, Urdu and Sanskrit. Part 2 includes the main pillar subjects of secondary education β Mathematics, Science and Social Science. Part 3 is a new addition that deals with the overall development of students. Part C, the new addition, deals with topics like mental health, career education, art education, and physical fitness. These have been introduced into the existing curriculum. Scholarsacademy
This Part 3 will not be tested in the traditional board exam format β assessment is holistic through projects, portfolios, and presentations. Your NoteBook
New textbook names β the old names no longer apply
This is the first thing every student and parent must know. The books your child used to buy are no longer the right ones. Here are the new textbook names for Class 9 in 2026-27:
The updated NCERT Class 9 textbook names for 2026-27 are Ganita Manjari for Maths, Exploration for Science, and Kaveri for English. Other new books include Ganga for Hindi, Sharda for Sanskrit, and Understanding Society: India & Beyond for Social Science. Educart
If someone is offering you the old Beehive, Moments, or the previous Maths or Science books for Class 9 β do not buy them. They will not match what is being taught in school this year.
Subject-wise changes β what is new, what is removed, what is added
Mathematics β Ganita Manjari (New book name)
Maths has seen the most dramatic change of any subject.
Topics traditionally taught in Classes 10 and 11 β such as Arithmetic Progression, Pair of Linear Equations in Two Variables, Areas Related to Circles, and Geometric Progression β have been introduced at the Class 9 level. Educart
The new book emphasises why before how β questions often appear before formal methods, asking students to reason, explain and explore. Expect more visual, investigation-style chapters. Competishun
A two-level system has also been introduced for Maths:
Proficiency Level is compulsory for all students. Advanced Level is optional, for students aiming for higher mathematics. This system allows students to learn at their own pace and interest level. Mktimes
So if your child wants to prepare for JEE or competitive exams, the Advanced Level is the path to take. If they want to focus on boards and other subjects, Proficiency Level is enough.
Science β Exploration (New book name)
The number of chapters in Science has been reduced from 12 to 11, but the depth and focus of the content has been shifted toward application of concepts. Science also has a two-level system β Proficiency for all and Advanced for JEE/NEET aspirants. EduAid Learning App
Here is what changed in each branch of Science:
Physics:
The Gravitation chapter has been deleted from the Physics section. However, the chapter "Work and Energy" has been expanded and renamed "Work, Energy and Simple Machines." Simple machines like pulleys, inclined planes, and levers have been introduced in this chapter. EduAid Learning App
Chemistry:
The total number of chapters in the Chemistry section has been reduced to 3 from 4. There is now a greater emphasis on atoms, molecules, and chemical reactions with practical examples included for better understanding. EduAid Learning AppMktimes
Biology:
The number of chapters has increased. New chapters on reproduction and biological diversity have been added. Emphasis is on life processes, cells, and tissues. Mktimes
Earth Science β brand new addition:
Alongside Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, a new branch named Earth Science has been brought in. Earth Science does not have a separate book, but it covers topics of natural cycles, Earth systems, radiation, and the balance of the environment. Scholarsacademy
Social Science β Understanding Society: India & Beyond (New book name)
This subject has changed the most structurally. What used to be four separate books β History, Geography, Political Science, and Economics β is now one integrated book.
The old four-book system has been replaced by one integrated book with 16 thematic chapters split across Part 1 and Part 2. The focus has shifted from rote memorisation to conceptual understanding, inquiry-based learning, and Indian Knowledge Systems (IKS). Competishun
Instead of teaching History, Geography, Political Science, and Economics as four isolated streams, the new syllabus weaves them together into themes like "Beginnings of Civilisation," "Democracy," "Building a Resilient India," and "From Ideas to Startups." Competishun
Here is what changed within each Social Science area:
History:
The draft revised syllabus of the History section starts from Early human History and covers major developments up to 1200 CE. Chapters that were earlier part of Class 12 syllabus like Harappan Culture and Bhakti Traditions are now included in the Class 9 NCERT book. EduAid Learning App
Geography:
Several topics included in Class 11 are now part of the Class 9 syllabus of Geography. The topics which have moved from Class 11 are β Plate Tectonics, Interior and Composition of the Earth, Ocean Relief and Biomes Distribution. EduAid Learning App
Political Science:
High level concepts like Justice, Authority, and Elections β which were formerly included in Class 11 β are now part of Class 9. EduAid Learning App
Economics:
Stress has been given to introduce students to practical financial literacy instead of theory. Students will now be taught topics like budgeting, income tax, and investment options. EduAid Learning App
English β Kaveri (New book name)
The old Beehive and Moments books are gone. The new English book is called Kaveri.
The biggest change in English has happened in the writing section. Students will have to write essays persuading the readers, research-based answers, creative stories, and analytical paragraphs. This changes modern education trends where communication skills matter more than memorisation. Scholarsacademy
The new English textbook Kaveri is made to improve reading and comprehension skills through a mix of prose, poetry, and short stories. Educart
Hindi β Ganga (New book name)
The CBSE Class 9 Hindi book is divided into 2 parts: Gadya Khand (prose section) and Kaavya Khand (poetry section). The first part includes 7 chapters, while there are 5 chapters in the second part. Skillsnaplearning
Sanskrit β Sharda (New book name)
The CBSE syllabus for Class 9 Sanskrit has also been revised. Translation has been removed from the Writing section and replaced with Dialogue or Story Completion. Tatpurusha Samas has been explicitly added to the Grammar section. Ubhayapadi verbs and an expanded Avyaya list have been more clearly specified. Educart
How assessment has changed
Starting 2026-27, a major shift in how Class 9 is assessed: internal exams for core subjects will allow students to refer to textbooks and notes. This is a huge shift from the current closed-book format. The focus moves from "Can you memorise it?" to "Can you think with it?" Note: this applies to school-level internal assessments, not board exams. Your NoteBook
Does this affect Class 10, 11, or 12 students?

Does this change JEE or NEET preparation?
Students entering Class 9 in 2026-27 will appear for JEE and NEET around 2028-29, and the NTA is expected to align competitive-exam syllabi with the updated NCERT framework.
